Air Transport Considerations

Check-in Baggage:

  • Standard Size: 62" outside dimensions (length+width+height) = No extra charge.
  • Oversize: 63" to 100" = Extra Charge. Over 100" = Air Freight charges.
  • Standard Weight: Up to 70 lbs. at no extra charge. Over 100 lbs. = Air freight.

Carry-on Baggage:

  • Maximum size: 22" x 14" x 9"

Weight Restrictions:

Most major airlines on domestic U.S. flights will allow a free baggage allowance of three pieces; combined checked and carry-on baggage, with usually a maximum of 2 pieces to be used as carry-on pieces.

  • Carry-on baggage must fit under the seat or in an overhead compartment.
  • Rule-of-Thumb: An item should measure no more than 9" x 14" x 22" and weigh no more than 40 pounds.
  • Briefcases and garment bags are generally considered carry-on items.
  • Each checked item should not exceed a total linear dimension (length + width + height) of 62" and 50 lbs.
  • Additional pieces of checked baggage may have lighter and smaller restrictions.

Most airlines will allow oversize or overweight baggage or additional baggage for an additional fee, which varies depending on the situation. International flights generally have the same size and weight allowances, but may cut down on the number of pieces that can be checked.

Also, allowance variations can differ depending on the destination country. With the ever-changing policies in airline travel it is always best to contact the airline of your choice by phone or visit their homepage for updated and current information.

Personal items which are not considered carry-on baggage include the following:

  • Purses, briefcases (sometimes consided a carry-on), laptops, and small book-bag style backpacks.
  • Other similar item are sometimes allowed, such as small tote and shoulder bags.

Additional items may be allowed if they are not 36 linear inches (length + width + height) larger than the restrictions listed above, including:

  • Outer garments such as coats, wraps or hats;
  • Umbrellas, books, newspapers, bistro-sized or smaller bags of consumable food;
  • Approved safety seats for lap or ticketed children, strollers or diaper bags;
  • Device such as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, etc.
  • Therapeutic oxygen provided by the airline.
